Chromium is one of the most widely used metals in industry and its hexavalent salts are considered among the most toxic and carcinogenic pollutants for animals and humans. This metal has a cumulative effect in flora and fauna, creating an ecological disequilibrium. Among the conventional technologies used to remove chromium ions from aqueous solutions, we cite chemical precipitation, ion exchange, electrolysis, treatment and adsorption. Among these, adsorption is a promising technology as it offers several advantages (efficiency, ease of handling, availability of different adsorbents and high profitability). Thus, the objective of this study is to present a bibliographical overview on the elimination of hexavalent chromium by natural adsorbents.en_US
