Abstract: The objective of this study is to study the potential for the synthesis and use of composite materials based on adsorbents (activated carbon and bentonite) and biopolymer (chitosan) for an application in the treatment of wastewater loaded with organic pollutants such as methylene blue. two composites based on (activated carbon and bentonite-chitosan) were prepared by a gelation/encapsulation process. The spherical bead samples obtained were characterized by TGA/CSD and UV spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and tested by their ability to remove methylene blue from aqueous solutions in continuous mode. The factors influencing the adsorption capacity of the pollutant, such as the variation of the pH, the height of the bed, the initial concentration of the pollutant in a fixed bed column were studied. The BDST model adequately described the adsorption of methylene blue on the composites prepared in the continuous mode. Parameters influencing breakthrough curves, such as bed height, inlet dye concentration, were investigated using the breakthrough curve, which showed a good fit for these curves. Adsorption through a fixed bed column is a feasible and economical technique to remove dyes. We can conclude in this study that the composite material of activated carbon –chitosan and bentonite-chitosan can be used effectively to remove dyes from wastewater
