| Citation: | As part of this thesis, two types of TiO₂-based nanocomposites were developed and evaluated for their photocatalytic efficiency in degrading organic pollutants, particularly industrial dyes. The first approach focused on studying the influence of different treatments of halloysite-type kaolinite used as a support for TiO₂, with the aim of enhancing the photodegradation of methylene blue. Analyses by X-ray diffraction (XRD), ATR spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the crystalline structure and porosity of the support significantly influence the photocatalytic properties. The addition of kaolinite resulted in an increase in the band gap and a marked improvement in dye degradation rates. In a second part, TiO₂-MgO/halloysite nanocomposites were synthesized with varying MgO contents. The incorporation of MgO improved charge separation by reducing electron-hole recombination, while halloysite contributed to an increased surface area and better catalyst dispersion. The TiO₂-MgO/halloysite composite demonstrated the best performance, achieving up to 99.8% removal of crystal violet dye, thus outperforming commercial P25 TiO₂. Kinetic studies revealed a chemisorption mechanism consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, while adsorption isotherm analysis followed the Langmuir model, indicating monolayer adsorption. |
